What is Neuropsychology?

Neuropsychology is the study of the interaction among the brain, the mind, and human behavior. A neuropsychologist has specialized training and knowledge in assessing various brain-based abilities such as attention, memory, spatial abilities, language, problem solving, planning, and mental control. Evaluations are conducted for many reasons including determining the cause of memory complaints; assessing the effects and severity of a brain injury, stroke, or other brain disease; and, among many other things, determining individual strengths and challenges as it relates to intellectual and cognitive abilities. Such an evaluation can be helpful in diagnosing various brain conditions such as dementia or mild cognitive impairment. It can also be helpful in developing a treatment plan for someone who has suffered a brain injury or illness.
